The South Marmara Food Cluster Project implemented by the South Marmara Development Agency and its Portuguese partner InovCluster Food Cluster, has reached its goal. A food cluster, with a corporate identity, was established in cooperation with the companies in food sector value chain in Balıkesir and Çanakkale. The association, which has 60 members, aims to increase the international competitiveness by implementing the food clustering modality.
South Marmara Development Agency Deputy General Secretary Dr. Kasım Özek emphasized, in the Project Closing Meeting, that they are expecting the food cluster to be sustainable and thus would like to take the opportunity of using international funds through the advantages of the cluster.
The Agency applied for the Development of International Competitiveness Programme which has been implemented by the Ministry of Economy and developed a five-year plan in the scope of this Programme.
The project, which started in February 2016, aimed to raise competitiveness in the food sector, establish communication and develop cooperation among companies through a food cluster, improve exporting capacities of the companies which are members of the cluster and finally to conduct the needed sectorial trainings and analysis. As part of the project, 120 companies that are active in the food sector value chain in the region have been visited. 9 focus group meetings were organized and comprehensive meetings with 250 companies were held. 450 companies were contacted and informed about clustering.
Thus, South Marmara Food Cluster project has reached all of its goals and led the way in establishing the first cluster association in the region in terms of sustainability.
